Incompetence see's more regional deaths
The NSW government continue to backflip on Average Speed Cameras, despite expert advice.

Incompetence
More people are losing their lives on NSW country road due to incompetence by the government. The country road toll has increased for 3-year and risen by 38% in 2026.
In 2011, average speed cameras were first introduced in NSW. The government restricted their use to heavy vehicles on regional roads, against international advice and experience in other states.
This appears a tactic to secure regional votes and nothing to do with road safety. Regional communities have suffered for 15-years, with road fatalities increasing from 175 to over 215 last year.
At the NSW Road Safety Forum in 2024, the key recommendation was to utilize average speed cameras for all vehicles. Over a year later the government commenced a trial at two camera locations, finding a significant improvement in lowering speeding.
Still we wait until September 2026, to see if the government will extend the benefit of lower speeding at all 32-speed camera locations. It will be a tragedy if they backpedal as the NSW road toll has increased by 27%* this year.
“With Easter just weeks away, a competent government would recognize the benefits of the trial and immediately switch on these cameras for all vehicles,” claims Noel O’Brien.
